Mövenpick Resorts' staunch commitment to nature sustainability has always been a matter of discussion within the Maldives hospitality circle. Ever since its advent to the Maldivian archipelago, the resort has been busy with a wide variety of sustainability campaigns and programs accomplishing its responsibility to environment and the community.

This is what every Maldives resort should be striving towards. Yes, the undisturbed rapport with nature and its Eco-system have always been the hallmark of Maldivian private island tourism. Now Movenpick Kuredhivaru has been setting before the entire world a true model of keeping nature in tact.

Interestingly the very over-all island architecture and the operation of the resort were envisioned with a focus on lasting commitment to preserving marine environment of the resort.

As part of world environment day lets hear about various green initiatives and interesting nature-preserving measures undertaken by Movenpick Kuredhivaru.

#1 Discrete Waste Disposal & Recycling

The waste-management wing of the resort has separate methods to handle dry and wet waste. They are segregated and processed individually. Even plastic, paper and glass are sorted out. The transportation of dry waste out of the island is reduced to the minimum by using resort's own incinerator, bottle crusher and compacting machine. 3-R dictum "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" is carried out the resort wide.

#2 In-house Desalination & Water production

Movenpick Kuredivaru is in possession of its own desalination plant that can convert the ocean water to pure one by taking out the salt element. The water is consumed for different purposes like shower, bathtub and tap in the guest villas and staff area. The water is a hundred percent safe for skin and hair.

#3 Drinking Water Production Plant & Non Plastic Bottles

Production of drinking water has also much to do with eliminating the plastic waste from the island. Movenpick Resort Kuredhivaru has its own plant for drinking water and produces non-plastic bottles in two sizes: small (0.5L) and large (1L). The water is served in villas and restaurants.

#4 Movenpick Garden & STP (Sewage Treatment Plant)

Movenpick Kuredhivaru boasts of hydroponics farm and garden (kind of horticulture that uses no soil). The resort claims to be self-sufficient because of its monthly harvest of 70 kilos of produce year round (sustainable product supply programe). This committed organic gardening helps the greenery of the island remain lushly. Even the manure and nutrients for the plants are also procured domestically.

Sewage Treatment Plant is an innovative initiative to put the water wastage to minimum while watering the garden.

#5 Solar Electricity Meeting 40% of the Daytime Power Needs

The solar system at Movenpick Kuredhivaru has 900 solar panels installed on the roofs of house buildings synchronized with generator to produce energy. They can produce 450 KW electricity a day that account for 30 – 40% of the daytime power needs. The records show that the solar system has kicked in around 600 MWh that saved the consumption of 158,000 litres of diesel since its installation in January 2019.

#6 Adherence to Sustainability Even In The Small Affairs

The list never ends. There are several other resource-saving programs the resort currently is on. The wide usage of LED lighting reduce the current consumption to a great extent. When it comes to bathrooms, there you can find dual flush systems in toilets to be discreet with water usage.

Taking a middle course between plastic and wood, the resort has resorted on WPC to make walkways on the island; and it is environment-friendly. The built-in AC system in all villa units uses its power to heat the water supply once got operating.

#7 Green Globe Certification & Movenpick Kuredhivaru

Remarkably, Movenpick Hotels & Resorts have committed to Green Globe Certification as a company-wide campaign to retain environmental and social sustainability of international standards. Presented as part of UN's Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992 as a principle for sustainable development, the Green Globe program advocates sustainable practice within the travel and tourism sector providing certification, training and marketing services in 83 countries.
